The most distinctive features of this 1 910ha reserve are three granite outcrops, named Bretagne, Paarl and Gordon's rocks. From the summits of these domes, one has a breathtaking view over the surrounding area. If lucky enough, you might even spot a pair of black eagles gliding on the thermals.

Situated west of the picturesque town of Paarl, the sanctuary has an abundance of protea species growing around the outcrops. Exploring the reserve via the many pathways or the Klipkers Hiking Trail (2 hours), visitors will find small patches of indigenous forest in sheltered places. While hiking, they may even catch a glimpse of the shy Cape grysbok or admire the rock dassies basking in the sun. After an exhausting walk, visitors can relax at the picnic sites or go fishing in the three dams on top of Paarl Mountain (licence required).

An interesting feature of the Paarl Mountain Reserve is that it contains another reserve within its boundaries, namely the Meulwater Wild Flower Reserve. Here visitors are treated to views of about 200 plant species, including erica, protea, pincushion and gazania.

The reserve offers no accommodation and is open to the public throughout the year. Opening time: 1 April to 30 September - 07h00 to 18h30; 1 October to 31 March - 07h00 to 19h00.

How to get there:
From Cape Town take the N1 in the direction of Worcester. Take the R45 exit to Paarl and follow the road into town for a short distance. Then turn left at the signpost to the Paarl Mountain Nature Reserve. There is also an entry point to the reserve at the northern end of Paarl.
